Hurry Tomorrow is a compelling documentary about
the loss of
human rights suffered by psychiatric patients in a state mental institution.
This highly acclaimed classic was filmed over a six-week period in a locked
ward at
Metropolitan State Hospital in Los Angeles. It shows patients being
tied down with straps
and cuffs, forcibly drugged with tranquilizers,
reducing them to helpless zombie-like
states. The film also illustrates how
individuals struggle to maintain their dignity in a
dehumanized environment.
An effort by hospital staff to ban Hurry Tomorrow resulted instead in
a major
investigation of conditions at California's state hospitals,
uncovering the tragic deaths
of several hundred patients.
"Hurry Tomorrow is the most important film on hospital life to
emerge in the last ten years and goes way beyond
Titicut Follies or One Flew
Over the Cuckoo's Nest in its indictment
of mental hospital conditions. ...beautifully made."
Alan Rosenthal, THE DOCUMENTARY CONSCIENCE
(UC Berkeley Press,
1980)
"A crucifying indictment of ward
conditions, drug companies
and the violations of present laws.
The film is an act of
courage and a warning about mind control,
told with compassion and rage."
Linda Gross, THE LOS ANGELES TIMES
"Astonishing
and terrifying...makes the multi-oscared "
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" look like baby games."
Derek Malcom, THE GUARDIAN
"A passionate, purposeful film document, all the more real for its
righteous
prejudice against unreasoning authority."
Andrew Kopkind, WBCN RADIO, Boston
"Absolute and unflinching"
Desmond Ryan, THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER
"It is enough to make you swear off anything
stronger than warm milk forever."
Vincent Canby, THE NEW YORK TIMES

"Awesomely true and inspirationally powerful.
It is an excellent training experience for new advocates and a humbling
reminder
for those of us who believe we have seen it all."
Steve Schwartz, National Association for Rights,
Protection and Advocacy NARPA
